Hello, and welcome to Missouri S&T! My name is Dr. Edna Grover-Bisker; but you can call me Eddie - just like everyone else on campus does. I am the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and one of the BEST parts of my job is Parent and Family Relations. As a parent, I know there are many factors you and your student must consider when deciding which school to attend. Degree programs, affordability, location, extracurricular activities - we appreciate your choice of Missouri S&T and are here to help answer any questions your family may have at any point.
Parent and Family Relations is committed to serving you and your student with support, information, communication, and problem solving. You are essential to the success of your student and the success of our university as a whole. Thank you for your strong partnership with us - thank you for allowing us to support your student.
Keep in mind that you can visit https://parents.mst.edu/ anytime for great resources, parent frequently asked questions and also subscribe to our Parent and Family Connection newsletter. Of course, don’t forget to like and follow us on Facebook – this is another way we share information, but also a great way to connect with other parents at S&T. Always feel free to send us an email at parents@mst.edu.
The W curve is a predictable pattern of stages that occurs when a person experiences culture shock.
Honeymoon — starts before student arrives on campus, maybe a little nervous but mainly excited. Sense of freedom, making new friends, sometimes homesickness mixed in with the fun.
Culture Shock — after newness wears off, reality of adjustment sets in. Within the first 6 weeks, adapting can be draining, challenging academics, homesickness increases.
Initial Adjustment — around mid-terms, begin to feel at home on campus and develop a routine; successfully overcoming conflicts and challenges.
Mental Isolation — around Thanksgiving, caught between two worlds (home and campus), feel a lack of belonging, beliefs and values may be challenged. Stress related to academics, time management, future goals, or finances.
Acceptance & Integration — becoming more involved oncampus, gaining balance, increasing autonomy, feeling at home on campus.
